Spring break this year meant a family camping trip in Little Dixie. My youngest was the most excited about the trip. Like most other four year olds I know, the kid loves camping. Roasting marshmallows, setting off fireworks, sleeping in the trailer, and nature walks are among his favorite things to do. Often when we are here these trails are occupied with four wheel vehicles, and the noise that comes with them, but this time it was just us. The silence broken only by a train going by in the distance and the chirping and howling of a few of the animals that call this land home. It was an absolute joy watching while he explored this environment both familiar and foreign to him; searching for animal tracks, collecting sticks, and getting dirty, just as a kid should do in a place like this. Thanks to all the responsibilities that come with adult life, I feel old most of the time, but moments like these make me feel young. Through him, with him, I can be a kid again. I can't wait until the littlest in the family is big enough to get out of the carrier and join in the fun.
